Garden

From make this melissa

In February we moved from a gorgeous and enormous old officers house in the Presidio a few blocks from the Golden Gate Bridge. Wonderful and amazing but socked in fog for all but a month or two a year. We relocated to a small sunny spot a bit South of the Mission, only 6 miles away. What a difference! I could barely get Kale to grow in the Presidio and here we have PLANTS!

And now for the tour...

Pop Pop Poppies!

A sunflower that spontaneously sprouted from under the bird feeder. I have since thrown handfuls into our otherwise dirt pile of a yard to add some green...

We are all about the container garden right now so that we can take them all with us if we move... A friend recomended the Bountiful Container to us and it has been a great reference.

Mixed in with the poppies are three types of squash, strawberries, a pineapple guava shrub, and an artichoke. Behind it is a bougainvillea which we nursed back to life after it was shaded by a pine tree that was recently removed and bound by cement slurry that someone had poured around it's foot. The bougainvillea is just now beginning to turn pink.

A busted dresser was a perfect solution for planter boxes! Cinder blocks, a few holes drilled out for drainage and some bracing at the corners. In these we have four cherry tomato plants (two yellow, two red), cucumber, red and green and hot peppers, chives, and some bell pepper seed sprouts.

We're not done yet!

A couple of hanging plants for herbs (Cilantro, Parsley, Basil, Peppermint) with a couple string beans mixed in and more Bud Light plant markers. Inspired by the how to from Instructables zoe_roses we planted two full size upside down tomato plants but I fear they will be unsuccessful since the stalks attempted to upright themselves. I will keep you posted.

Besides the bougainvillea the yard also came with a lemon tree, a cherry tree, and an overgrown holiday pine that has since been removed.

The lemon tree is heavy with lemons right now. I have already tried one as a garnish in my water and it was tasty!

The cherry tree is GINORMOUS and therefore mostly ornamental. It was bare when we first moved in and we couldn't quite tell what to expect from it. The cherry blossoms were beautiful pink. I'm guessing it is about 50 feet tall with the lowest branches about 20 feet up. It shades the three story building next door and partly shades our yard. It does have cherries however and a few have fallen. I am not above eating off the ground... a bit tart but yum. Of course, as I lay on the ground trying to take a photo Mad popped up, cutie!

I took this at the top of a ladder with my camera super zoomed in:

This and a stump is all that remains of the holiday pine. It threatened to compromise the neighboring structure...

So, that is the garden so far. So excited. Yum.
